Connect and post to Bluesky (password or OAuth)

Connect Bluesky by signing in with Bluesky or with an app password, then post text and up to four images from OmniPosts.

Updated

There are two ways to connect Bluesky. Neither gives OmniPosts your main password, and neither needs a platform review.

Way What happens Best for
Sign in with Bluesky (recommended) You approve OmniPosts on your Bluesky server's own page. Almost everyone.
App password You paste a separate password you created in Bluesky's settings. Servers that do not support signing in this way yet.

Sign in with Bluesky

On Channels, choose Bluesky, keep Sign in with Bluesky selected and enter your handle. Your name alone is enough: alice becomes alice.bsky.social. If you use your own domain, type it whole. OmniPosts finds the server that holds your account (your PDS), sends you to that server's sign-in page, and you approve OmniPosts there. You come back to OmniPosts and the channel is saved.

OmniPosts asks for exactly three things, and the approval page lists them:

  • Your identity: which account you are, so OmniPosts posts to the right one.
  • Create posts: OmniPosts can publish new posts. It cannot edit or delete your posts, change your profile, follow anyone or read your messages.
  • Upload images: for the images in your posts.

If you run your own server, OmniPosts uses it, as long as the server supports signing in this way and is reachable on the public internet. If it does not, OmniPosts tells you to connect with an app password instead.

OmniPosts keeps the sign-in fresh: it renews it when it posts, and at least once a week otherwise. About an hour before a scheduled post is due, OmniPosts checks that its access still works, so if you ended it, the channel asks for a reconnect while there is still time, not when the post should go out. You can end OmniPosts's access at any time from your Bluesky account settings. Disconnecting the channel in OmniPosts ends it too: OmniPosts deletes its copy and tells your server to cancel the sign-in.

App password

Choose Use an app password instead. First create one in Bluesky under Settings, then Privacy and security, then App passwords. The form asks for two things:

Field What to enter
Handle or email Your name, like alice (OmniPosts adds .bsky.social), your own domain, or your account email.
App password The app password you created. It is hidden as you type.

OmniPosts signs in, finds the server that holds your account and saves the channel. Channels you connected with an app password before keep working; you do not need to switch.

What you can post

  • Text. Up to 300 characters, counted as Bluesky counts them: what a person sees as one character is one, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. Bluesky also caps a post at 3000 bytes, and OmniPosts checks that too.
  • Images. Up to 4 per post, JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 2,000,000 bytes each. Alt text is supported, up to 2000 characters.
  • Video. Not supported in OmniPosts yet.
  • Links and hashtags. OmniPosts turns links and #hashtags in your text into clickable ones. Mentions are not turned into links.

The composer shows no extra Bluesky settings.

Numbers you get

Per post, Bluesky shares likes, reposts, replies and quotes. It does not share views, reach or impressions, so those show "Not available" with the reason. For the account, OmniPosts records followers, following and post count each day. Likes received show as not available.

Counters appear only when OmniPosts has switched numbers on for Bluesky. When they are off, the cell says OmniPosts has not yet confirmed the number is reliable. Per-post numbers are read for 30 days after posting. See Honest numbers.

Good to know

  • Each post goes out once. OmniPosts gives each post a fixed identity on Bluesky, so a retry cannot create a second copy. If OmniPosts is unsure whether a post went out, it checks before doing anything else.
  • Sessions renew themselves. OmniPosts renews the sign-in in the background. If Bluesky later ends OmniPosts's access (you removed it in Bluesky's settings, or deleted the app password), the channel needs a reconnect.
  • Rate budget. Bluesky allows 5,000 write points per hour and 35,000 per day for an account, and a post costs 3 points. Self-hosted servers set their own limits.
  • A deactivated, suspended or taken-down account cannot be posted to, and OmniPosts says so in the result.
