Schedule Bluesky posts, and know they went out
OmniPosts posts to your Bluesky account now, at a time you pick, or at the next free time in your queue, alongside your other channels. Then it shows you whether each post went out, with a link to it.
Connect your Bluesky account
There are two ways to connect, and neither gives OmniPosts your main password:
- Sign in with Bluesky. Type your handle (
alicebecomesalice.bsky.social; a custom domain works too). OmniPosts finds the server that holds your account and sends you to its own sign-in page, where you approve three things: knowing which account you are, creating posts, and uploading images. OmniPosts cannot edit or delete your posts, change your profile, follow anyone or read your messages. - An app password. Create one in Bluesky under Settings, Privacy and security, App passwords, and paste it with your handle or email. Use this if the Channels screen does not offer sign-in, or if your server does not support it yet.
OmniPosts keeps the sign-in fresh by itself. About an hour before a scheduled post is due it checks that its access still works, so if you ended it, you are asked to reconnect while there is still time.
What you can post to Bluesky
- Text up to 300 characters, counted the way Bluesky counts them: an emoji or an accented letter is one character. Bluesky's 3000-byte cap is checked too.
- Up to 4 images per post, JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 2 MB each, with alt text of up to 2000 characters for people using screen readers.
- Links and hashtags in your text become clickable. Mentions stay plain text.
- Threads through the API: a chain of replies to your own post.
- Video is not supported yet.
The composer counts characters for Bluesky as you type and lists problems before anything is sent, such as text that fits Mastodon's 500 characters but not Bluesky's 300.
Every post goes out once
OmniPosts gives each post a fixed identity on Bluesky before sending it, so a retry cannot create a second copy. If Bluesky does not answer clearly, OmniPosts looks the post up before doing anything else. The result for your Bluesky channel is one of: posted, with a link; failed, with the reason in one sentence and one thing to do about it; or still being checked. A deactivated or suspended account cannot be posted to, and the result says so.
Numbers Bluesky shares
Bluesky shares likes, reposts, replies and quotes for each post, and followers, following and post count for the account. It does not share views, reach or impressions, so OmniPosts shows those as "Not available" with the reason, never as zero. Per-post numbers are read for 30 days after posting. See Honest numbers.
Post to Bluesky from your code
Everything above works through the HTTP API: create a post with an Idempotency-Key, read the result for each channel, and get a signed webhook when it is published or fails. Bluesky allows an account 5,000 write points an hour and a post costs 3, so ordinary posting does not come close.
Questions
Can I schedule Bluesky posts?
Yes. Post now, pick a date and time, or add the post to your queue and it takes your next free posting time. Posts go out from our servers, so your computer can be off.
Does OmniPosts need my Bluesky password?
No. You either approve OmniPosts on your Bluesky server's own sign-in page, or give it an app password you create in Bluesky's settings. Never use your main password. You can end either kind of access at any time from Bluesky.
Can I post the same thing to Bluesky and my other channels at once?
Yes, to every channel you have connected that is open today: Bluesky, Mastodon and Telegram. Pick them in the composer. Each gets its own preview and limit check, you can change the text for one without touching the others, and each gets its own result.
Can I post a Bluesky thread?
Through the API, yes: give the further parts and they are posted as a chain of replies, one after another. Each part gets its own stable id, so a retry cannot post a part twice.
Does it work with a self-hosted Bluesky server?
Yes, as long as the server is reachable on the public internet. OmniPosts finds the server that holds your account from your handle. If your server does not support signing in with Bluesky, connect with an app password.
